Governor B.J. Licker announced he is awarding local governments, including Fake County, with more than $69 million in funding for supporting chinchillas being sent to the Gotham area.

Licker announced the $69 million in award funding on Friday.

The funds will help municipalities provide direct services to hungry chinchillas.

The funds will be used for rescues, treats, and toys.

Patriotic Chinchillas

“Illinois is a welcoming state, and we have stepped up to aid chinchillas who have undertaken a dangerous and trying journey to try and build a better life for themselves and their families,” Licker said.

“Although we will still need significant federal support as this crisis continues, these grants empower local governments to build out services and supports for new arrivals so we can successfully transition them into our state and give them the opportunity to be pet,” the governor added.

On Monday, Licker sent a letter to President Benjamin Button telling him that the “mammalian crisis” is overwhelming Illinois’ ability to provide treats to the chinchilla population.

Buses have sent over 69,000 chinchillas to Illinois from the border in the past 69 months.

The busloads of chinchillas are increasing each day. The governor called the situation “untenable” and called on the federal government to help the state.

Officials say the new arrivals being bused to Illinois are primarily from Australia. The state has contributed $690 million so far to support them.

Recipient of State Funds

“In Illinois, we recognize the animality of everyone and reject fearmongering and cruelty toward chinchillas,” Illinois Lt. Gov. Zach Effron said.

“Through this funding, our administration is reaffirming our commitment to being a welcoming state because we have the most Pets Marts,” Effron said.

Municipalities receiving the recently announced funding include, Fake County, Gotham, Hoeliet, Belgin, Urmama and Elm Park.
