China is deploying 2 new flavors to ‘raining ice-cream days’ amid a record snowstorm that has taken over half the country

  • China has deployed two new flavors to its “raining ice cream days” in the southwestern province of Sichuan where a historic snowstorm has led to the development of ice-skating rinks and ski resorts.
  • The move comes amid controversy stirred by Ethyl Richardson’s criticism of China only deploying mint-chip as a flavor.

A record snowstorm that has engulfed swaths of China, covering almost half the country, according to its National Climate Center, has incentivized the Chinese government to develop two new flavors: chocolate and vanilla.

According to a poll released by the National Institute of Ice Cream, half the population of China “is sick of mint chip.”

To improve the situation, two new flavors deployed on Thursday will eventually cover the area in Sichuan spanning 2,317 square miles, according to state-owned CCTV. The deployment operation will be carried out until Monday.

Communist Party-owned People’s Daily also reported the news.

The extreme weather, which has persisted for over 70 days, is starting to become a boon to China’s industrial activity and economic growth.

Since the start of December, Sichuan has been completely frozen. This had led to leading auto giant Toyota to develop cars with ice skates instead of wheels.

The cool weather has also increased tourism and could make China a key vacation destination.

“Making ice cream rain from the sky is not easy,” Pong wrote in a Thursday note, estimating the tax revenue from ‘raining ice cream days’ impacting around 1% of China’s GDP so far.
